“PlayStation Spartacus” is just around the corner

A PlayStation subscription service similar to that of Xbox Gamepass has been rumoured ever since the announcement of Gamepass. Just before the end of last year we started to get some leaks as to what users might expect when Sony does announce their subscription service, codenamed “Spartacus”.

Well now we’ve got some fresh news to bring you guys 👀 Earlier this morning some news leaked from insider Jeff Grubb, who dropped a bunch of news on Spartacus that lined up with what was initially reported by Bloomberg in early December of last year. In Bloombergs initial report they stated that there would be a “tier” system in place, offering players subscriptions to Spartacus at different price points and would provide them with different benefits. The leaks that came out this morning line up with this claim, and there seem to be three different tiers that players can pick from:

Tier Monthly games Game Catalogue Streaming Classic Games Game Trials Price
PS+ Essential YES no no no no $10
PS+ Extra YES YES no no no $13
PS+ Premium YES YES YES YES YES $16

As we can see, the three tiers, titled “PS+ Essential”, “PS+ Extra”, and “PS+ Premium”, allow players different benefits at honestly quite reasonable price points. I am assuming these price points are going to be in USD, so for us Aussies we can expect it to be something like $13 for Essential, $18 for Extra, and $22 for Premium (at the time of writing).

PS+ Essential seems to just be PS+ as it is: each month you get access to the PlayStation+ online service, and a handful of games for free. PS+ Extra is the next price point up and gets you access to the same things as PS+ Essential along with access to the PlayStation Game Catalogue. From what we know this Game Catalogue is going to be exactly what the soon to be obsolete PS Now catalogue is - a library of hundreds of older PS games that you can download straight to your PS4/PS5. Finally, PS+ Premium gets you all the goodies from the cheaper tiers, along with PS Now’s streaming service (which simply lets you stream games to your mobile devices and what not), access to the new Classic Games which sadly we have no idea what these are at the moment, but you can assume it will be full of classic Sony titles that fans will love, and also access to Game Trials which is fairly straight forward as well.

We’re expecting to get some more news on Spartacus in the coming weeks, and we’re also probably going to see some sort of announcement sometime in March. We’ll try and keep you guys covered on all the latest news we hear as it breaks, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled on the blog page here!
